Beloved fall colors in one of my favorite places on Earth.
Boneyard beaches like this one in South Carolina completely change their appearance during low and high tides. They also become completely impassable during high tide. After all, the dead trees “grow” exactly where the beach gets flooded and exposed twice a day.
A very special and intimate combination of colors during a high-tide sunrise at Edisto Beach.
I'm so lucky there was no representative of social services in this Alaska state park when my little daughter was crying, exhausted after the long hike, cold and wet in the rainy and windy highland tundra, while her retarded daddy was trying to create a composition for the photo. I'm sure she's still plotting a revenge in her head.
Driving with one headlight broken could be dangerous. But at least it could give a nice effect if you accidentally ended up being photographed.
While a long exposure during high tide can create the effect of thick fog instead of water, a long exposure during low tide turns the sand into a magical mirror.
The next level in landscape photography, after waking up early and hiking far, would be carrying a couple of bags of fallen leaves to throw into a waterfall pool if there aren’t enough floating there for the composition.
What can a person camping right by the ocean with no access to the Internet for 24 hours do? Right, watch the breathing of the water and take occasional pictures. While at some coastal locations, changes to the scenery brought by low or high tide are hardly noticeable, here on Shi-Shi Beach the in-water rocks become barely visible during high tide, but almost all the water retreats during low tide. Living through every minute of these slow changes is a truly magical experience.
The beginning of a new day brings a sense of life to this somewhat apocalyptic location.
I was extremely lucky to spend three mornings on this beach around Christmas time, with each morning bringing amazing sunrises and the entire beach all to myself.
Perspective-wise, this is easily the most unusual waterfall I’ve ever photographed.
Sometimes I feel reluctant to shoot photos of places where I can bring little to no uniqueness to the classic view or perspective. Sometimes, though, the places are simply too beautiful not to try.
Very few people are familiar with this park, even those living on the East Coast and leading an active outdoor life. I'm not sure why, but I'm actually quite happy with this fact. Twenty-one named waterfalls on just a five-mile hike. If you like small East Coast forest waterfalls, this is definitely the place to be.
First, something glimpsed on the live-view screen of my camera. “I need to sleep more during my trips,” was my first thought. Then I saw a crowd of kids running along the shore towards me. Then a big gray body appeared from the water again, this time closer to me. In a minute, the animal showed up again less than a hundred yards from my spot. Alaska is a place where whales literally jump into one's photo.
