    2020

    connecting with 2020...
A big, lazy part of me is still looking forward to the moment when I create a photo masterpiece in my backyard. This was a close call, though. It took me a 7-minute drive from my house to enjoy this beautiful sunrise fog over the Potomac River. I even managed not to miss my morning coffee.

I keep complaining all the time that fog conditions are not very frequent here in Virginia. When they do happen, even ordinary scenes often turn into something magical. However, when they do happen, it's always in the morning, and I'm typically too lazy to drag myself out of bed.

I didn't have a remote shutter release with me that day, so I had ten seconds between hitting the camera button and sprinting to the spot where I was going to stand and express something profound. And I had to repeat this entertainment a dozen times. Luckily, the dense fog meant nobody could see this idiot with his bizarre morning exercise.

One of my favorite pictures taken in Ricketts Glen State Park. The peak of October foliage brings lots of colors and opportunities for artistic long-exposure photos.

After an exhausting 100-foot-long hike from the parking lot, I relaxed by scrambling on the steep slope, searching for the most intriguing perspective of this roadside waterfall.

One of the most fascinating things I find about waterfalls is how drastically their appearance and mood change with varying amounts of water in the creeks and rivers. While a regular passerby might have been disappointed by the low water in the creek that October in Ricketts Glen, some waterfalls simply became even more photogenic.

We often forget how much beauty something simple can hold. I need to remind myself of this every time I take my camera.

I've seen this waterfall after heavy rains, when the water rushes down in a single flow. I've seen it after a period of drought, when there was too little water to convey any sense of intensity. But sometimes, everything just aligns perfectly.

I like to think about this photo as the one marking a new period of my hobby. More involved and determined. Perhaps because waking up that winter morning after an almost sleepless night brought a funny mixed sensation of utmost beauty and suffering. “Looks like I just got the very essence of landscape photography“, I thought to myself.
