Dramatic light conditions in this ever-changing landscape of Oregon coast.
Remote and ten times less crowded part of Acadia park. The atmospheric conditions didn't bring me any light that evening, but I managed to find some vibrant colors in a different way.
After having a pint of pilsner in a bar in Pacific City, Oregon, I set out to wander the sandy hills of Cape Kiwanda, although I could have just stayed and had another pint of pilsner. Never did I achieve anything more heroic in my life. And I'm still wondering to this day whether the consistent leaning of the trees in the photo was caused by the wind or the pilsner.
How about a cocktail for a 5 a.m. breakfast? Might be a bit too early, but such is the misery of a landscape photographer’s life.

What can a person camping right by the ocean with no access to the Internet for 24 hours do? Right, watch the breathing of the water and take occasional pictures. While at some coastal locations, changes to the scenery brought by low or high tide are hardly noticeable, here on Shi-Shi Beach the in-water rocks become barely visible during high tide, but almost all the water retreats during low tide. Living through every minute of these slow changes is a truly magical experience.
Sometimes, it’s the Manhattan skyline emerging through the haze of Newark as you approach New York City on I-95. Sometimes, it’s the jagged ridge of the Sierra Nevada against the blue sky as you descend into Owens Valley after leaving the scorching heat of Death Valley. But in every case, I always perceive it with the awe and humility of a piece of seaweed washed ashore by a high tide.

First, something glimpsed on the live-view screen of my camera. “I need to sleep more during my trips,” was my first thought. Then I saw a crowd of kids running along the shore towards me. Then a big gray body appeared from the water again, this time closer to me. In a minute, the animal showed up again less than a hundred yards from my spot. Alaska is a place where whales literally jump into one's photo.
When blue and golden hours meet.
This is probably one of the most photographed destinations on the planet. The variety of perspectives and weather patterns allows the pictures to be quite different, though.
